In addition to its well-known immune role, colostrum is the first, unique food of the newborn calf. It must be taken within 6 hours after calving. A recent study* has shown that colostrum in suckler cows is lacking energy but IgG are in surplus compared to colostrum of dairy cows.
The risk of vitality lack due to energy deficit is real: colostrum-supplementation with a high energy product is necessary for nursing calves.
